Blood and Magick (ARC) by James R. Tuck

Blood and Magick:
Taking out hellish creatures—not a problem. Armed with blessed silver hollow-points and the ability to manipulate magick, he’s ready for anything—except betrayal he never saw coming…

Deacon Chalk knows the biggest danger in fighting monsters is becoming one. Just another day at the office for your friendly neighborhood occult bounty hunter. If keeping three helpless were-dog children safe means battling a malevolent trio of witches by any means necessary, so be it. If that means partnering with a ruthless government agent to stay one step ahead of the allies and friends he must now suspect, he’s not going to cry about it. The only way Deacon can save humans and shape-shifters alike is to embrace a power beyond his imagining, putting his team at stake—and his soul on the line…

Every time I pick up one of the Deaconverse books by James R. Tuck I'm pulled directly into his unique world, and I hate having to leave it. Deacon Chalk has become my perfect anti-hero, he hunts down evil paranormal beings not just for shits and giggles, but to avenge his lost family. But immersing himself in this world gained him a new family and James tugged on my heart-strings with this one, bringing on tears and there is nothing I love more than a book that can make me cry. Tiff has grown into a wonderful character, and I love that she is not just a character that became sidelined. James gave her a definite purpose and has made he a strong individual that I admire. James writes incredibly fast paced books filled with action and adventure, with just enough romance to soften the stories and I can't wait to get my hands on the next one.

Deacon once saved the life of a pregnant lycanthrope, and now those children are in peril as a dangerous group of witches begin hunting them. And standing in their way are Deacon and his friends. After the witches' first attack, a tentative alliance is made with a secret government agency in order to save Deacon from prison. The loss of someone close to Deacon makes the fight even more personal and he will stop at nothing to stop the witches. When the final battle begins, Deacon must send everyone away in order to protect them, leaving him to fight on his own. In the end Deacon must make a choice, gain back what he once lost and condemn the world, or stop the powerful witch from opening a portal that can never be closed.
