The Crossroads Tour Day 2

1. Could you tell us a little bit about the world you created in Dreaming Anastasia?

There are two worlds in DA – our real every day world and the magical world that bleeds into it after Anne collides with Ethan. In the magical world, Russian fairy tales are real. The witch Baba Yaga exists; she has been compelled by the secret Russian Brotherhood to save and protect Anastasia Romanov. Other Russian folkloric creatures exist, such as rusalkas – malevolent mermaids cursed to haunt and lure people to their destruction. And in book 3, Koschei the Deathless, who cannot be killed until his hidden soul is found. Once Anne has both figuratively and literally entered the forest of this world, her own powers come forth, increasingly like those of Baba Yaga – abilities to manipulate the elements.

2. Would you be willing to tell us where you see the series going?

Well, since Again and Again is the last book of the Dreaming Anastasia trilogy, I will say that everything is going toward a huge, dramatic set of climactic events! Readers will find out what happens to everyone in the novels and will discover if Anne and Ethan will end up together!! Plus more witch and mermaid action. And some time travel! And a really cool body switch. It’s crazy fun!!

3. Which of your own characters do you most enjoy writing?

I love all my characters, but I have to say that I still enjoy writing Anne’s friend Tess the most because she is outspoken and brave and really funny. It’s always fun to write someone who has no filter. Lots of exciting things happen with Tess in both Haunted and the forthcoming Again and Again.

4. Which of your characters do you find most difficult to write?

No one is hugely difficult, but at times Ethan is the hardest because he has lived a long time and thus has an old-fashioned sensibility that sometimes takes some work to capture. But I love Ethan. He’s such a hapless sweetheart.

1. Could you tell us a little bit about The Most-Wanted Deck of Monsters?

Absolutely!

For years we’ve feared the monsters under our beds – but how much do we really know about them? A zombie invasion is inevitable, but do we have the tools to defeat them?

Our Most-Wanted Monsters books will divulge 52 key facts to help level the playing field and give young monster slayer’s a chance in a world crawling with paranorms. Readers can feast their eyes on mythology, lore, and pop culture references for more than a dozen creatures – zombies, vampires, specters, werewolves, shapeshifters, faeries, witches, warlocks and more.

Judith Graves and I invite you to check out our weekly blog where we profile a new monster every week. Also, you can follow us on Twitter: @MWMonsters. Seriously, those tweets may save your life!

2. Would you be willing to tell us where you see the series going?

We’ve planned 13 books in the non-fiction series, but have already begun writing accompanying fiction, graphic novels, and even a script. There’s a tremendous amount of vampire, werewolf and witch stories out there for young readers (and for that, I’m grateful), but many of the lesser-known monsters have hovered under the radar. We want to shine a spotlight on them, help you get to know them, before they GET you.

3. Which of your own characters do you most enjoy writing?

Whichever one I’m writing about at the moment. I tend to get really into character while writing, and so at that moment in time, that character is really all I think about. I think that’s part of what makes writing so much fun – the ability to “be” someone else for awhile.

4. Which of your characters do you find most difficult to write?

If I find myself struggling with a character, it’s typically because I haven’t done a good enough job getting to know him/her. When my character profiles are tight, the writing is smoother, whether I’m in the protagonist’s head, or creating havoc as the villain.
